My alt-j obsession continues. It hit me hard…my heart currently lies in an Awesome Wave. Not by choice anymore. Obsession is not the most comfortable feeling.

Anyway the lyrics to “Breezeblocks” are stuck to me. The song about sinister love.

Anyone who has been in love and was left by that love can understand there is a threshold between grief and madness.

This song demonstrates the madness.

Joe Newman brilliantly makes reference to “Where the Wild Things Are”, a story that provides a perfect analogy for the madness of love.

After reading someones interpretation online, it helped me make sense of the lyrics. Here is my interpretation based off that.

“She may contain the urge to run away (she wants to leave)
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks (he is holding her in the relationship)
Citrezene your fever’s gripped me again (she wanting to leave is making him upset “giving him a fever”, her being there “his citrezene” is making him feel okay for the time being)
Never kisses all you ever send are fullstops, la la la la (she is not giving him any love and is constantly turning him down)
Do you know where the wilds things go (the fear of her leaving has turned him into a sort of monster “the wild thing”)
They go along to take your honey, la la la la (him as the “wild thing” is taking her energy and happiness “her honey”)
Break down now weep build up breakfast now (she is crying, but he is ignoring it and pretending everything is normal, going on with day to day routine)
Let’s eat my love my love love love, la la la la (he is telling her to eat, like everything is normal)
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe (he feels fear of her leaving spread all over his body)
The fear has gripped me but here I go (the fear of losing her has a hold of him, and he is acting on that fear)
My heart sinks as I jump up (he is scared, he feels its is not right, he becomes overwhelmed and “jumps up” to ignore his feelings and go along happy as normal)
Your hand grips hand as my eyes shut (she prays for a way out while he sleeps)
Ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah, ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah
Do you know where the wild things go
They go along to take your honey, la la la la
Break down let’s sleep build up breakfast now
Let’s eat my love my love love love, la la la la
She bruises coughs she splutters pistol shots (him holding her in the relationship is harming her  well being “bruises coughs” as well as his, she verbally hurting him “splutters pistol shots”)
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks (he doesn’t care if the relationship is harming her and him, he continues to hold her in the relationship)
She’s morphine queen of my vaccine my love my love love love, la la la la (he is comparing her to a very addicting drug)
Muscle to muscle and toe to toe
The fear has gripped me but here I go
My heart sinks as I jump up
Your hand grips hand as my eyes shut
And ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah, ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah
Ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah, ahhh ahhh ahhh ah ah
She may contain the urge to runaway
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Germaline disinfect the scene my love my love love love (he knows that his love for her is sinister and he is trying to clean it up, to act like it is not happening)
But please don’t go I love you so my lovely
Please don’t go, please don’t go, I love you so, I love you so
Please don’t go, please don’t go, I love you so, I love you so
Please break my heart, hey (he knows she doesn’t love him)
Please don’t go, please don’t go, I love you so, I love you so
Please don’t go, please don’t go, I love you so, I love you so
Please break my heart, ah ha
Please don’t go, I’ll eat you whole (he knows if she stays with him, the monster in him will take “eat up”  all the life out of her, she will not be the person she used to be, she will be depressed and joyless, but he wants her so bad he is willing to accept that fate)
I love you so, I love you, so I love you so
Please don’t go I’ll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so, I love you so”

At the end of the story book “Where the Wild Things Are”, the boy, Max, leaves the Wild Things to go home. Upset, the Wild Things yell “Please don’t go! We will eat you up! We love you so!”
